Centred on southern Peru, the Nazca civilization is noted for the long-distance lines with which they scored the arid deserts of the region. Created between 200 BC and 750 AD, these are thought to be religious in purpose and are associated with shrines. Some depict animals and other effigies also featured on flamboyant Nazca pottery. The Nazca state was absorbed in the growing empire of Huari in the 8th century AD.
